유엔은 불법 마약에 대한 국제적 수요가 급증하고 있다고 지적했습니다. 유엔의 연례 세계 마약 보고서는 불법 마약 시장의 소매 가치가 유엔 회원국 약 90퍼센트의 국내 총생산 GDP를 초과하고, 또한 사하라 사막 이남의 모든 나라들의 국내 총생산과 같다고 밝혔습니다.
이 보고서는 현재 약 3200억 달러로 추산되는 코카인과 아편, 암페타민 형태의 각성제, 칸나비스 수지, 혹은 해시시 등이 포함된 불법 마약 거래에서, 인도 대마인 칸나비스가 가장 큰 부분을 차지하고 있다고 설명했습니다.
이 보고서는 그러나 아프가니스탄과 동남아시아의 양귀비 재배는 줄어드는 것 같다고 밝혔습니다. 아프가니스탄은 세계 아편의 3분의 2를 생산하고 있으며 정부는 양귀비 재배 농지를 줄이는데 앞장서 왔습니다.

A new report from the United Nations shows global demand for illegal drugs is soaring. The annual World Drug Report indicates the retail value of the illegal drug market is higher than the gross domestic product of nearly 90-percent of the U.N. member countries, or equal to the entire domestic product of sub-Saharan Africa.
The report says cannabis accounts for the largest part of what it estimates is now a 320-billion dollar business that includes cocaine, opiates, amphetamine-type stimulates and cannabis-resin or hashish.
But it says poppy cultivation appears to be declining in Afghanistan and southeast Asia. Afghanistan produces two-thirds of the world's illegal opiates but its government has been leading an effort to cut down on land under poppy cultivation.
