A special envoy to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has arrived in Zimbabwe to assess the impact of the country's recent crackdown on shantytowns -- a move that has earned international condemnation.
Anna Tibaijuka, the executive director of U.N.-HABITAT, is traveling with an eight-member delegation. U.N. officials say she is expected to meet with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe this week.
Her trip comes amid international criticism of Zimbabwe's forced eviction program. Authorities have demolished thousands of shanties and street shacks -- leaving hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans homeless and without a livelihood.
