호주에서 일하던 인도 출신 의사의 수술을 받고 87명의 환자가 숨지는 사건이 불거지자 호주 환자들이 외국 출신 의사를 거부하는 사태가 벌어지고 있습니다.
호주 의료협회의 무케쉬 하이커왈 회장은 17일, 외국 의사들이 인종학대자들로 비난을 받고 있으며 환자들로부터 거부를 당하고 있다고 말했습니다. 하이커왈 회장은 이 같은 인종차별이 전국적으로 일어나고 있으며, 특히 “죽음의 의사”라는 별명을 가진 인도인 의사 제이언트 파텔이 근무했던 퀸즈랜드 주에서는 그 정도가 심하다고 말했습니다.
이미 미국의 2개주에서 수술행위 금지 조치를 당한바 있는 파텔은 자신에 대한 혐의가 들어나자 금년초 호주를 떠났습니다. 호주 경찰은 국제적으로 파텔을 지명수배 하고 있습니다.
파텔과 관련된 사망 사건은 2003년과 2004년 그가 퀸즈랜드의 분다버그 지방 병원 수술과장으로 일하던 시기에 발생했습니다.

Medical patients in Australia are refusing to see foreign doctors because of a scandal surrounding an Indian-trained surgeon linked to 87 deaths.
Australian Medical Association president Dr. Mukesh Haikerwal said today (Friday) that foreign doctors have been subjected to racial abuse and rejected by potential patients. The doctor said discrimination was occurring throughout the country, but especially in the state of Queensland, where Dr. Jayant Patel -- nicknamed "Doctor Death" -- had been employed.
Dr. Patel, already banned from surgery in two U.S. states, left Australia earlier this year after allegations against him surfaced. Police have launched a global manhunt for him.
The deaths all occurred while he was director of surgery at Queensland's regional Bundaberg Hospital in 2003 and 2004.
