일본의 고이즈미 준이치로 총리는, 논란많은 자신의 야스쿠니 신사 참배에 관해 한국 지도자들로부터 이해를 구할 것이라고 말했습니다.
고이즈미 총리는 16일 도꾜에서 기자들에게 이같이 말하고, 오는 20일 서울에서 한국의 노무현 대통령을 만날 때 이 주제에 관해 이른바 “솔직한 대화”를 갖겠다고 밝혔습니다.
지난 해 2004년 1월에 야스쿠니 신사를 마지막으로 참배했던 고이즈미 총리는, 전쟁으로 사망한 자들에게 경의를 표하고 평화를 기원하려 신사를 참배한다고 말했습니다.
고이즈미 총리는 추후의 신사 참배에 관해서는 노 대통령과의 회담 후 결정할 것이라고 말했습니다.
일본의 식민 통치시 많은 고통을 당한 중국과 남북한은 고이즈미 총리에게 신사참배를 하지 말라고 요구해왔습니다. 야스쿠니 신사에는 일반 전몰 장병의 위패와 함께 전범으로 규정된 인사들의 위패도 안치돼 있습니다.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi says he will seek understanding from South Korea's leaders about his visits to a controversial war shrine.
Mr. Koizumi told reporters in Tokyo today (Thursday) he will hold what he called "frank" talks on the subject when he meets with South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun Monday in Seoul.
China and the two Koreas, which suffered bloody occupations by Japan, have asked Mr. Koizumi to stop visiting the shrine. Convicted war criminals are honored at the monument, along with other Japanese war dead.
Mr. Koizumi, who last visited the shrine in January 2004, said he goes there to pay tribute to the war dead and pray for peace. He said he will decide on future visits after his talks with President Roh.
