조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 레바논에 시리아 정보 요원들이 계속 남아있다는 보도들을 우려하고 있다고 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 시리아에게 그 같은 주장을 철저히 규명할 것을 촉구했습니다.
앞서 백악관 대변인은 레바논 주둔 정보 요원들이 레바논에서 현재 진행중인 전국 총선을 간섭하고 있다고 비난했습니다.
시리아는 라피크 하리리 전 레바논 총리가 암살된 뒤를 이어 국제적인 압력하에 지난 4월 레바논 주둔 자국군 병력과 정보 요원들을 모두 철수했다고 주장했습니다.
백악관은 레바논 주둔 시리아 정보 요원들이 모두 철수했는지를 입증하기 위해 레바논에 조사단을 파견하기 위한 유엔 계획을 지지한다고 말했습니다.
앞서 미국의 언론 매체들은 미 관리들의 말을 인용해 레바논 정국을 교란시키기 위한 의도로 시리아가 레바논의 주요 지도자들을 살해하기 위한 암살자 명단을 갖고 있을 지도 모른다고 보도했습니다.

President Bush says he is disturbed by published reports that Syrian intelligence agents are still in Lebanon, and he called on Damascus to follow up on the allegations.
Earlier, a White House spokesman accused Syrian intelligence agents in Lebanon of meddling in the country during its ongoing national elections.
Damascus said it withdrew its troops and agents from Lebanon in April, amid intense pressure following the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.
The White House says it supports a U.N. plan to send a team to Lebanon to verify that Syrian agents have left.
U.S. news reports published today quoted U.S. officials as saying Syria may be targeting key Lebanese leaders for assassination.
A prominent Lebanese politician (Walid Jumblatt) also accused Syrian agents of targeting opposition leaders.
