Published reports quote U.S. officials as saying Syria may be plotting to assassinate Lebanese political leaders to destabilize Lebanon.
Senior U.S. officials told the New York Times and Washington Post newspapers the United States has received "credible" information that Syria has developed a "hit list" targeting Lebanese.
The officials say the plan is aimed at regaining control over Lebanon. International pressure forced Damascus to withdraw its troops and agents from the country in April after 29 years of political influence.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said Thursday the Bush Administration is concerned about a pattern of political killings, following the assassinations of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri (February 28th) and an anti-Syrian journalist (,Samir Kassir, June 2nd).
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan says he may send a team back to Lebanon to verify reports Syrian agents are still operating in the country.
