럼스펠드 장관은 싱가포르에서 열린 아시아 안보회의에 참석한 후 하루 방문일정으로 5일 방콕에 도착해 태국 총리 및 국방장관과 요담했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 태국과 다른 국가들에게 해적 퇴치 노력에 미국과의 협력을 강화할 것을 촉구하면서 특히 세계 석유 수송의 절반과 미국 교역량의 3분의 1이 통과하는 말라카 해협의 해적 퇴치를 강조했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 토요일 아시아 안보회의에서 중국의 군사력 증강이 아시아의 안보 균형에 위협을 줄수도 있다고 우려를 표명했습니다. 그는 21개국의 국방장관들에게 연설하면서 중국은 세계에서 3번째로 큰 국방예산을 갖고 있다고 말하고, 어느 나라도 중국을 위협하지 않은데도 불구하고 중국은 미사일 군사력을 증강하고 있음을 지적했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 북한의 핵 야심이 역시 지역 안보를 위협하고 있다고 지적하고 중국은 북한을 협상장으로 돌아오도록 설득시키는데 가장 중요한 열쇠를 쥐고 있다고 말했습니다.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is in Thailand for a day of meetings with top officials, after attending an Asian security conference in Singapore.
Mr. Rumsfeld arrived Sunday and meets with Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and defense officials today (Monday).
At the security conference Saturday, Mr. Rumsfeld voiced concern over China's military buildup, saying it could threaten the security balance in Asia.
He told defense ministers from 21 nations that China has the third-largest military budget in the world and appears to be expanding its missile forces, despite the fact that no nation threatens China.
He said North Korea's nuclear ambitions also threaten the security of the region, and Beijing could make a key contribution in persuading Pyongyang to return to negotiations.
