미국의 도날드 럼스펠드 국방 장관은 북한의 핵무기 개발 계획과 중국의 국방비 증액은 아시아에서 제기되는 가장 심각한 국방 문제들이라고 말했습니다.
럼스펠드 장관은 3일 사흘 일정으로 싱가포르에서 개막된 연례 아시아 안보 회의 수행 기자들에게 그같이 말했습니다.
안보 회의 개막에 앞서 럼스 펠드 장관은 또한 국민에게 보다 자유로운 경제 및 정치 체제에서 허용되는 많은 기회를 제공할 경우 중국은 보다 성공적인 국가가 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
그는 또한 북한에 대해 탄도 미사일과 잠재적인 핵기술을 주도적으로 확산시키고 있는 나라 가운데 하나라고 일컬었습니다.
미국 관리들은 이번 회의중에 럼스펠드장관이 일본과 한국, 호주의 국방 장관들과도 비공식 양자 회담을 가질 것이라고 말했습니다. 참석자들은 또 작년 12월 쓰나미 참사를 당한 인도양 국가들을 돕기위한 국제적 협력 체제를 개선하는 방안도 논의할 예정입니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says North Korea's nuclear program and China's increase in defense spending are part of a host of serious defense issues for Asia.
Mr. Rumsfeld is among regional leaders attending a three-day Asian security conference that began today (Friday) in Singapore. He spoke to reporters traveling with him. Prior to the start of the conference, Mr. Rumsfeld told them China would be a more successful country if it offered its people the opportunities that freer economic and political systems permit.
He also called North Korea one of the world's "leading proliferators" of ballistic missile and potentially nuclear technologies.
U.S. officials say the Pentagon chief will hold private talks with defense ministers from Japan, South Korea and Australia. Participants at the conference also will try to improve international cooperation on relief efforts for nations devastated by the Indian Ocean tsunami in December.
