The governor of (the western U.S. state) of California has announced an ambitious plan to cut the state's emissions of greenhouse gases that many scientists believe cause global warming.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told delegates to a United Nations environment conference in San Francisco that he has approved a plan to reduce the state's emissions of such gases over the next five years to less than it produced in 2000.
His goal is to cut emissions in 2050 to 80-percent less than the levels in 1990.
Schwarzenegger unveiled his plan Wednesday. He did not offer specifics but environmentalists say the targets can be met through existing and future technology and government-backed incentives.
Local officials from around the world are meeting in San Francisco through Sunday, which the United Nations has designated as World Environment Day.
