Iraq has deployed tens of thousands of troops and police in the capital, Baghdad, to hunt down and capture insurgents.
Iraqi officials say the so-called "Operation Lightning" began early today (Sunday), when the first of more than 40-thousand soldiers and police began erecting scores of checkpoints on the southern and northern outskirts of the city.
Separately, Iraqi police say insurgents attacked a British military convoy south of Amara, 290-kilometers southeast of the capital, Baghdad.
Britain's Defense Ministry says a British soldier was killed in the roadside bomb attack, but gave no other details.
Earlier, the U.S. military said a Marine was killed Saturday in a roadside bomb attack near Haqlaniyah, 137-kilometers northwest of Baghdad.
