A month-long review of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty has drawn to a close without any significant accomplishments.
Participants at U.N. headquarters today (Friday) said there was no agreement on any move to strengthen the treaty - and delegates were not able to reach a final consensus statement.
Delegates from 180 nations took part in the session -- one in a series of talks held every five years since the treaty came into force in 1970.
The review was intended to measure progress on disarmament and on containing the spread of nuclear-weapons technology, but participants said the meetings were dogged by disagreements.
The United States and other nuclear powers pushed for a focus on preventing nuclear proliferation, amid mounting concern over the nuclear intentions of Iran and North Korea. Non-nuclear countries sought promises that countries with atomic weapons would disarm.
