분석가들은 실업률 증가와 대중의 지지를 받지 못하는 사회 보장 개혁 때문에 슈뢰더 총리의 인기가 2002년 재선 이래로 급락해 왔다고 말하고 있습니다.
기민당의 앙겔라 메르켈 당수는 슈뢰더 총리의 조기 총선 촉구를 환영했습니다. 조기 총선 계획은 하원인 분더스타그 (Bundestag)의 승인을 받아야만 합니다.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has called for early national elections a year ahead of schedule, following his party's defeat Sunday in a key state election.Mr. Schroeder made the surprise announcement just hours after his Social Democratic Party suffered a loss (by about seven percentage points) in North Rhine-Westphalia state to the opposition conservative Christian Democrats. The defeat ends 39 years of Social Democrat dominance in Germany's most populous state.
Analysts say Mr. Schroeder's popularity has plunged since his 2002 reelection due to rising unemployment, and unpopular social welfare reforms.
Christian Democratic leader Angela Merkel -- Mr. Schroeder's likely challenger -- welcomed the call for early elections.
Germany holds national parliamentary elections every four years. The lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, must approve any early elections.
