이집트 경찰은 불법 회교 야권 정치 운동 단체인 무슬림 형제단의 고위 지도자들을 포함해 단원 25명 이상을 체포했습니다.
오는 25일의 대통령 선거법에 관한 국민 투표에 앞서, 22일 새벽에 체포된 사람들 가운데는 무슬림 형제단의 마후무드 에자트 사무총장도 포함되어 있습니다.
무슬림 형제단과 다른 단체들은 국민투표 불참을 촉구해 왔습니다. 국민투표를 통해서 대통령 선거법이 승인되면 이집트는 헌법을 개정해서 오는 9월에 사상 최초로 복수 후보가 출마하는 대통령 선거를 실시할 수 있게 됩니다.
무슬림 형제단은 헌법 개정이 독립 후보들에 대한 엄격한 규정을 수립하고 집권당의 승인을 받지 않은 출마 희망자들을 효과적으로 배제하게 될 것이라면서 이에 반대하고 있습니다.
이집트는 최근 몇주 동안 무슬림 형제단 단원 700여명을 검거했습니다. 무슬림 형제단은 정부 당국의 이같은 검거 조치는 영향력 있는 야권의 목소리를 잠재우기 위한 노력의 일환이라고 말하고 있습니다.

Egyptian police have arrested 25 more members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, including one of the opposition group's top leaders.
The Brotherhood's secretary-general, Mahmoud Ezzat, was among those arrested in pre-dawn sweeps today (Sunday) ahead of Wednesday's national referendum on presidential election rules. The Muslim Brotherhood and other groups have urged a boycott of the vote.
If approved, the referendum will amend the constitution so Egypt can hold its first multi-candidate presidential election in September. The Brotherhood opposes the amendment because it sets tough conditions for independent candidates, effectively excluding anyone not endorsed by the ruling party.
Egypt has arrested more than 700 members of the Brotherhood in recent weeks. The group says today's arrests are an attempt to silence influential opposition voices.
