More than 200 people attended an opposition assembly in Cuba today (Friday) to begin planning a democratic transition in a post-Castro Cuba.

The landmark conference was organized by prominent dissidents Marta Beatriz Roque, Felix Bonnne and Rene Gomez. It was not clear up until the congress started that Cuban authorities would allow it to go ahead.

The group heard a message from President Bush promising that Cuba will soon be free.

On Thursday, the Cuban government expelled two European lawmakers and detained at least two Polish journalists who had come to the country to observe the assembly, prompting angry reactions from their governments.

The dissidents say they seek democratic reforms after decades of communist rule. Cuban leader Fidel Castro has denounced them as "mercenaries" bankrolled by the United States.
