Brazil says deforestation in the Amazon over a one-year period ending in August 2004 was the second-largest amount of land ever cleared in the tropical rain forest.
Brazil's Environment Ministry says 26,130 square kilometers of trees were destroyed in the period, about 3,000 square kilometers short of the record set about a decade ago.
The head of the Amazon program for the environmental group Greenpeace (Paulo Adario) says the report is a "tragedy." He says it shows deforestation is not a priority for Brazil's government.
But Brazil's environment minister (Marina Silva) says officials will work to fight deforestation in the Amazon.
