Egypt's opposition Muslim Brotherhood is vowing to continue anti-government protests, despite the arrest of hundreds of demonstrators in a police crackdown during the past week.

In a demonstration today (Sunday) in Cairo, several hundred members and supporters of the banned Brotherhood joined forces with the opposition Kefaya (Enough) group to demand the release of the jailed Egyptians.

The Muslim Brotherhood calls for competitive elections aimed at replacing Egypt's secular government with an Islamic state. The Kefaya group has for weeks been demanding widespread government reforms, while protesting the rule of President Hosni Mubarak.

In recent weeks, both groups have launched a series of rare public protests in Cairo, ahead of parliament's discussion this week of a proposed constitutional amendment allowing competitive presidential elections in Egypt for the first time.
