미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 부쉬 대통령의 중국 방문을 앞두고 중국 정부의 반체제 인사들에 대한 단속 조치 보도에 대해 미국 정부는 우려하고 있다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 20일 베이징에서 이같이 말하고, 미국 관리들은 이문제에 대해 진상을 밝힐 것이라면서 개방된 사회 는 자신들의 의사를 표현하는 국민을 허용해야 한다고 강조했습니다.
프랑스 언론 매체는 중국 당국이 최근 최소한 십여명의 반체제 및 운동권 인사들을 구금 또는 가택 연금시키고 있다고 보도했습니다.
라이스 장관은 또 미국정부는 지난 9월, 구체적인 몇몇인권 사례에 대해 행동을 취하도록 촉구한 미국의 요청에 대해 별다른 진전이 없는 것에 실망하고 있다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Washington is concerned about reports of a Chinese government crackdown on dissidents ahead of President Bush's visit.
Ms. Rice told reporters in Beijing today (Sunday) the United States would strongly raise its concerns with Beijing. She says U.S. officials will seek clarification on the matter, and will make clear -- in her words -- "open societies societies allow people to express themselves."
The French news agency says Chinese authorities have recently detained or placed under house arrest at least a dozen dissidents and activists.
Secretary Rice also says Washington is disappointed in China's lack of progress to a request made in September for action on specific human rights cases.
The secretary says the issue of human rights in China will be a long conversation over a long period of time.
