The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization is warning that bird flu could spread from Turkey to neighboring countries, despite measures taken to contain the virus.
The U.N. agency's senior animal health officer (Juan Lubroth) says far more human and animal exposure to the virus will occur if strict containment fails to isolate the current outbreaks. On Tuesday, Turkish health officials confirmed a 15th case of bird flu, including two children who have died.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization has confirmed that two more people in China have died from the virus, bringing the country's death toll from bird flu to five. WHO officials say 78 people worldwide have now died from bird flu since 2003. All of the deaths, with the exception of those in Turkey, have occurred in East Asia.
