Get in the way (of someone/something)

Jen: What are you doing right now?

Jason: I’m watching a movie and it’s so good! I can’t stop watching it.

Jen: Aren’t you supposed to be studying for an exam? I think watching a movie is getting in the way of your studies.

Jason: Ah, you’re right. It’s getting in the way of my studies. I’ll turn it off now.

제가 Jason에게 “What are you doing right now? 너 지금 뭐하니?” 라고 묻자 Jason이 “I’m watching a movie and it’s so good! I can’t stop watching it. 영화가 아주 재미있어서 계속 보게 되네.” 라고 하네요. 제가 “Aren’t you supposed to be studying for an exam? I think watching a movie is getting in the way of your studies. 너 지금 시험 준비해야 하는 거 아니야? 영화가 공부에 방해될걸.” 이라고 하자 Jason이 “Ah, you’re right. 네 말이 맞아. It’s getting in the way of my studies. I’ll turn it off now. 공부에 지장이 있을 테니까 지금 끌게.” 라고 하더라고요. Keep today’s expression ‘get in the way (of someone or something) in mind and let’s hear the conversation again.

Today’s expression is get in the way (of someone/something). ‘Get in the way (of someone or something)’ means to prevent something from happening or to prevent somebody from doing something. ‘Get in the way’는 ‘누군가 또는 뭔가를 방해하다, 막다, 심사를 부리다.’ 오늘 본문에서 제가 Jason에게 “Aren’t you supposed to be studying for an exam? I think watching a movie is getting in the way of your studies. 너 지금 시험 준비해야 하는 거 아니야? 영화가 공부에 방해될 걸.” 이라고 했죠. 이렇게 무언가가 돼 가는 걸 방해하거나, 사람이 어떤 일을 하려고 할 때 방해가 되는 상황에서 쓸 수 있는 표현이 바로 ‘get in the way (of someone or something)’입니다. Let me give you some examples. “Don’t let your emotions get in the way.” “Can you please stop getting in my way? You’re disturbing me.” Now you know what the expression ‘get in the way (of someone or something) means right? Then we will listen to the conversation for the last time.
