Ousted Kyrgyz Leader Signs Resignation Protocol - 2005-04-03

Kyrgyzstan's ousted President Askar Akayev has agreed to officially resign, ending some of the political uncertainty in the impoverished Central Asian nation.

Mr. Akayev agreed to step down during a meeting today (Sunday) in Moscow with a delegation of Kyrgyz lawmakers, headed by parliamentary speaker Omurbek Tekebayev.

Mr. Akayev told reporters after the meeting that a protocol for his resignation had been completed and that he will formally leave office on Monday. He said the two sides agreed on four points, including one that says "the president of the Kyrgyz republic will announce his resignation and make a personal statement."

The deposed leader fled the country more than a week ago after opposition followers seized his headquarters and other government buildings.
