1천 3백만명의 이라크 인들은 내년 1월 30일로 예정된 국회의원 선거에 투표하기 위해 유권자 등록을 마쳤습니다. 유권자 등록 명부는 이라크의 독립적인 선거관리위원회가 마련했습니다. 이라크 인들은 지난 12월 15일까지 유권자 등록을 끝냈습니다.
선거관리위원회 관계자들은 현재 240개 정당의 후보자들이 모두 275개 의석의 국회의원의 자리를 놓고 뜨거운 선거운동을 벌이고 있다고 말했습니다. 앞으로 구성될 국회는 정부 관리들을 선출하고, 헌법을 기초하게 됩니다.
리차드 바우처 미 국무부 대변인은 이라크 인들은 자유롭고 공정하고 투명한 선거를 준비하기 위해 열심히 일하고 있다고 말합니다.
리차드 바우처 대변인은 “이미 수많은 이라크 인들이 선거관리위원회에서 일하고 있으며, 또 독립적인 선거감시단체의 참관을 환영한다고 밝히고, 아랍연맹과 회교회의, 아프리카연합기구, 미주기구, 유럽연합, 유럽안보협력기구 같은 국내외 선거감시기구에 공식 초청장을 이미 발송했다”고 말했습니다.
바그다드에 사는 이라크인인 알리 파라즈 씨는 “신이 허락한다면, 이번 선거가 아주 깨끗하고 정직한 선거가 될 것”이라고 말합니다. 파라즈 씨는 이번 선거가 이라크 여러 정파간의 차이를 극복하고, 모든 이라크 국민의 이름으로 치루어지길 희망한다고 말합니다.

More than thirteen-million Iraqis are registered to vote in national assembly elections scheduled for January 30th. The voter registration list was prepared by Iraq's Independent Electoral Commission. Iraqis had until December 15th to register.
Election officials say that candidates from more than two-hundred-forty political parties are campaigning for seats on Iraq's two-hundred-seventy-five member national assembly. The assembly will select government officials and draft a constitution.
U.S. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher says that Iraqis are working hard to prepare for "free, fair and transparent elections"
"There are thousands of Iraqis already working for the electoral commission. They've already said they welcome independent international election observers and have issued public invitations to national and international election monitors such as the Arab League, the Islamic Conference, the Organization of African Unity, the Organization of American States, the European Union [and] the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe."
"God willing, the elections will be pure and honest," says Ali Faraj, an Iraqi from Baghdad. Mr. Faraj says he hopes the elections "will be held in the name of the whole Iraqi people, with no differences between Iraq's sects."
