South Korea, US Sign Deal to Move US Military Base from Seoul - 2004-10-26


South Korea and the United States have signed an agreement on relocating the main U.S. military base in South Korea out of Seoul by 2008.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said the commander of U.S. forces in South Korea, General Leon LaPorte, signed the accord today (Tuesday) with South Korean Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung.

Under the deal, the base will be moved from central Seoul to Pyeongtaek, located about 70 kilometers south of the South Korean capital.

Earlier this month, the United States announced it plans to withdraw 12,500 of its 37,500 troops now in South Korea by September 2008.
