오는 11일 부활절 주일을 나흘 앞둔 목요일은 예수가 제자들과 마지막 식사를 함께 한 날로 기독교도들은 믿고 있습니다. 이 최후의 만찬에서 예수는 제자들에게 세상끝까지 나가 모든나라 사람들을 제자로 삼으라고 말했습니다. 기독교 인들은 이말을 복음을 전파하라는 의무로 해석하고 있습니다.
그러나, 오늘날 그같은 계율을 따르는 것은 아주 위험한 일이 될 수도 있습니다. 지난 몇 주일 사이에 적어도 6명의 미국인 선교사가 살해됐습니다. 4명은 이라크에서 목숨을 잃었고, 2명은 우간다에서 숨졌습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 선교사들과 그 후원자들은 복음을 전파하겠다는 굳은 결의를 굽히지 않고 있습니다.
미국 위스컨신 주의 낙농업자였던 워렌 페트 씨와 도나 페트 씨 부부는 지난 1997년 기독교에 관한 가르침을 전파하는데 자신들의 인생을 헌신하기로 결심했습니다. 그들은 아프리카 2개국에서 선교활동을 펼쳤고, 1년 전 우간다로 건너갔습니다. 그들은 지난 달 농업과 요리, 그리고 성경을 가르치던 학교 인근에서 총격 살해됐습니다.

페트 씨 부부가 일했던 곳은 회교도들이 주로 거주하는 지역이었지만, 공격의 배후에 종교적 동기가 있었는지는 아직 확실치 않습니다. 페트 부부의 선교 활동을 지원했던 엘름부룩 교회의 선임 목사인 스캇 아르바이터 목사는 우간다에서 벌어진 일에 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
"위협이나 경고 등 페트 부부의 생명이 긴박한 위험에 있다는 아무런 징후도 없었습니다. 선교 활동에는 항상 위험이 따르지만 긴박한 위험은 없었습니다."
아르바이터 목사는 엘름부룩 교회는 항상 선교사들을 해외에 파견하기에 앞서, 위험 지역에 관한 미 국무부의 권고사항을 검토하고 현지 연락책들과도 이야기를 나눈다고 말했습니다.
또한 선교사들은 자신들이 원하는 지역에만 파견된다고, 아르바이터 목사는 말했습니다. 우간다에서 페트 부부는 현지 주민들이 기독교 신앙 뿐 아니라 농업 기술도 배울 수 있도록 도왔습니다.
밀워키 소재 마켓 대학교의 종교 윤리학자 다니엘 마과이어 교수는 미국의 부쉬 행정부가 대 이라크 군사 행동을 시작한 이래 선교 활동이 더욱 위험해 졌다고 말했습니다.
"국방부와 국무부, 백악관의 군사 공세에 따른 적대감 때문에 선교사들의 위험이 더욱 증대됐습니다. 선교사들이 반미감정의 희생양이 되고 있습니다."
그러나, 우간다에서 페트 부부의 선교 활동을 감독했던 [아프리칸 인랜드 선교회]의 래니 애론슨 씨는 자신들의 단체에 소속된 선교사들은 현지 주민들과 잘 지내고 있다고 말했습니다.
"사람들이 미국의 외교정책에 동의하지 않을 수는 있지만 그것 때문에 미국인들을 미워하지는 않습니다." 케냐에서 신학교를 운영중인 데이빗 카살리 씨는 미국 교회들에게 더 많은 선교사들을 파견하라고 페트 부부의 장례식에서 촉구했습니다.
위스컨신 주 워케샤에 있는 뉴 트라이브(New Tribes] 바이블 인스티튜트에서는 선교사가 되기를 바라는 사람들이 선교 방법을 배우고 있습니다. 학생들은 지난 달 페트 부부와 이라크에서 다른 4명의 선교사가 살해된 사건들에 관심을 보였지만, 마음을 바꾸지는 않았습니다.

This Thursday is Maundy Thursday, the day Christians believe Jesus shared his final meal with his disciples. At that "Last Supper," Christ told his followers to 'go and make disciples of all nations.' Christians interpret that as an obligation to evangelize. These days, though, following that commandment can be risky. At least six religious missionaries from the United States have been killed in the past couple of weeks. Four died in Iraq. Two were killed in Uganda. But, as Chuck Quirmbach reports, missionaries and those who sponsor them remain determined to spread their message.
TEXT: Warren and Donna Pett were dairy farmers in Wisconsin before deciding in 1997 to spend their lives teaching about Christianity. They served in two other African countries before transferring to Uganda a year ago. They were gunned down last month near the school where they taught agriculture, cooking and Bible classes. TEXT: About one-thousand mourners attended the memorial service for the Petts (Eds: March 28) in suburban Milwaukee. Friends and relatives spoke about the couple's devotion to Jesus and their mission. Their eldest son, Saul, remembered when he visited his parents in Africa, and they went with a guard to see some wild animals.

I looked back and instead of walking with his wife and talking with his son he hadn't seen in two years, my father was witnessing to the guard." (laughter from crowd) TEXT: Though the Christian couple was working in a predominantly Muslim area, it's not clear if there was a religious motive behind the attack. According to Scott Arbeiter (ARR-by-ter), a senior pastor at the evangelical Elmbrook Church that helped sponsor their mission, what happened in Uganda was a complete surprise.
AUDIO: CUT 3 ARBEITER "There were no threats, no warnings, no indication their lives were in any kind of imminent danger. There's always inherent risk, but there was no imminent risk."
TEXT: Mr. Arbeiter says Elmbrook Church always checks for U-S State Department advisories about dangerous conditions and talks with local contacts before sending anyone on a mission out of the country. He says missionaries are only sent where they are wanted. In Uganda, the Petts were helping local people learn about sustainable agriculture as well as Christian beliefs. The thousands of Christian missionaries around the world can do wonderful and heroic work, according to Daniel Maguire. But the professor of religious ethics at Marquette University in Milwaukee, says the missionaries have an ulterior motive: converting people.

The real achievement - which they recognize - is when someone is hungry they are fed, that's very clear, that's Gospel truth.... but the greatest achievement is when someone is fed and also embraces the Gospel and accepts Jesus."
TEXT: In Professor Maguire's view, missionary work has become more dangerous since the Bush Administration's military action in Iraq.

TEXT: But Lanny Aronson, of African Inland Mission, which supervised the Pett's work in Uganda, says his group's missionaries still get along well with their hosts.

TEXT: The deaths last month of the Petts and four missionaries in Iraq have caught the students' attention… but have not changed their minds. Andy Benezette (BEN-uh-zet) says he and his wife want to do mission work in the Philippines and are not afraid of any risk.

TEXT: Another student, Michelle Robinson, says she and her husband hope to go to Russia or perhaps New Guinea. She admits it's scary to think about being in harm's way... but insists the opportunity to spread the Gospel would be worth it.
