Two, new reports show U.S. companies continue to cut jobs, spreading fear that
the country's economic slowdown is turning into a recession.
Today's (Wednesday's)report by a private employment company (ADP
Employer Services)says U.S. companies eliminated 157-thousand jobs in
October. A separate report (from the human resources firm Challenger, Gray
and Christmas)says the number of workers fired in October is up 79-percent
compared to the same time last year -- near a five-year high.
U.S. stock futures headed lower after the release of the reports, indicating
the markets will likely open lower.
There are also indications efforts to loosen the tight credit markets may not
be working well enough.
A report today by an industry trade group (the Mortgage Bankers Association)says the number of Americans applying for home loans fell last week to the
lowest level in almost eight years because borrowing costs remain too high.
Meanwhile, Europe's biggest economy has moved to lessen the impact of the
financial crisis. Germany today approved an almost 30-billion dollar package of
tax cuts and loans.
