세계보건기구, WHO는 개발도상국에서는 정신질환을 앓고 있는 환자들이 수백만 명에 이르고 있으나 이들은 아무런 치료를 받지 못하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
WHO 는 9일 발표한 보고서에서 가난한 나라에서는 4명 중 3명이 아무런 도움을 받지 못 하고 있다고 지적했습니다.
이 보고서는 새로운 UN의 활동계획의 초석은 정신 질환에 대한 일반의 의식을 고취하고 각국 정부들이 기존의 정신질환 치료계획을 개선하거나 새로이 시작하도록 설득하는 것이라고 강조했습니다.
유엔의 노력은 정신분열증과, 약물 남용, 치매, 간질, 자살 방지 등을 포함한 8가지 정신 질환에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다.
WHO의 정신보건 담당자인 벤데토 사라세노 씨는 WHO가 2015년까지 전세계 정신질환자의 20퍼센트인, 4천만 명에게 치료를 제공할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다.

The World Health Organization says
millions of people in the developing world with mental health issues receive no
treatment.
The United Nations agency, in a report released Thursday, says three out of
four people in poor countries get no help. The report is the cornerstone of a
new U.N. program aimed at raising public awareness and persuading governments
to start or improve existing mental health programs.
The U.N. push is focused on eight mental health disorders, including
schizophrenia, substance abuse, dementia, epilepsy and suicide prevention.
WHO mental health director Bendetto Saraceno said his organization wants to
provide treatment by 2015 to 20 percent of the mentally-ill population
worldwide -- a full 40 million people.
