음베키 대통령은 집권 아프리카민족회의 약칭, ANC가 그에게 ANC의 제이콥 주마 당수의 부패 관련 재판에 개입됐다는 주장을 둘러싸고 사임하라는 요청이 있은 지 하루만에 사표를 제출한 것입니다.
분석가들은 음베키 대통령의 일부 지지자들이 집권 아프리카 민족회의, ANC에서 분리될 수도 있다고 말하고 있습니다. 그러나 아직까지 다른 어떠한 사임 발표도 나오지 않고 있습니다.
ANC는 22일 발레카 음베타 의회 의장을 임시 당수로 취임시킬 것으로 보입니다.

South African President Thabo Mbeki says he has handed in his resignation, following pressure from his party.
Mr. Mbeki says the resignation will be effective from a date to be decided by South Africa's parliament. He spoke Sunday in a nationally televised address.
The resignation comes a day after the ruling African National Congress, or ANC, asked Mr. Mbeki to step down over his alleged interference in the corruption trial of party leader Jacob Zuma.
ANC officials accuse Mr. Mbeki of pushing the corruption charges against his political rival.
Last week, a judge dismissed the charges against Zuma and suggested the case was politically motivated. Mr. Mbeki has denied interfering in the investigation.
Analysts say some supporters of Mr. Mbeki may split with the ANC. However, no other resignations have been announced.
The ANC is expected to install parliamentary speaker Baleka Mbeta as the interim president on Monday. She will serve until elections are held next year.
