미국과 영국이 유엔에 대해 버마의 개혁을 촉진하기 위한 접근 방식을 재검토하라고 촉구했습니다.
미국의 잘마이 칼리자드 유엔 주재 대사는 국제사회가 버마의 군사 정권에 압력을 더 가해야 한다며 이같이 말했습니다. 칼리자드 대사는 버마 군사정권이 국제사회의 요구를 계속 거부하고 있는 만큼, 더 효과적인 접근 방식에 대해 논의할 때가 됐다고 말했습니다.
영국의 존 소여스 유엔 주재 대사도 미국의 입장에 동의한다며, 유엔의 이브라힘 감바리 버마 특사의 외교적 노력 역시 버마 군사 정권의 비협조로 제한을 받고 있다고 지적했습니다.

The United States and Britain are calling on the United Nations to rethink its
approach to promoting reform in military-led Burma.
Speaking with reporters on Thursday, U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said the
international community needs to put more pressure on Burma's military leaders.
Khalilzad also noted that Burma's military junta continues to defy demands from
the international community, adding that it is time to debate what kind of an
approach would be more effective.
British Ambassador John Sawyers says he agrees and notes that recent diplomatic
efforts by U.N. envoy to Burma Ibrahim Gambari have been limited by the
country's military leaders.
Neither ambassador said how more pressure could be applied.
Their comments came as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was also expressing
his frustration with the lack of political progress in Burma.
