로버트 무가베 짐바브웨 대통령 측 대변인은 최근 미국의 제재는 짐바브웨 경제 회생을 막기 위해 계획됐다고 밝혔습니다.
조지 차람바 짐바브웨 정보장관은 27일 발행된 관영 '선대이 메일 신문'에서 새로운 미국의 제재는 짐바브웨 기업들이 중국이나 이란 등 비전통적인 투자자들을 찾는 것을 더욱 어렵게 하기 위해 의도됐다고 밝혔습니다.
짐바브웨는 지난 2002년 유럽연합이 첫번째 제재를 가한 이후 무역과 투자에서 이른바 '동방' 정책을 취해왔습니다. 미국 정부는 이듬해 짐바브웨에 대한 제재를 가했습니다.
미 재무부는 지난 주 짐바브웨 기업 17곳과 개인 1명을 미국 정부의 제재 명단에 추가했습니다.
조지 부시 미국 대통령은 이같은 조치는 불법적인 무가베 대통령 정권의 정치적 의도가 있는 폭력 사태에 대한 직접적인 결과라고 밝혔습니다.

A spokesman for Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe says the latest U.S. sanctions are designed to stifle economic recovery in the country.
Zimbabwe Information Secretary George Charamba told the state-run Sunday Mail newspaper today (Sunday) that the new U.S. sanctions were intended to make it more difficult for Zimbabwean companies to find Chinese, Iranian and other "non-traditional investors."
Zimbabwe has adopted what it calls a "Look East" policy for trade and investment since the European Union first imposed targeted sanctions in 2002. The U.S. imposed sanctions a year later.
The U.S. Treasury Department last week added 17 Zimbabwean companies and one individual (an Omani businessman) to the U.S. sanctions list.
U.S. President George Bush said the action is a direct result of "politically-motivated violence" by what he called the "illegitimate" regime of President Mugabe.
