Zimbabwe's ruling and opposition parties began power sharing talks today (Tuesday)
in an effort to end the country's violent political crisis.
The talks got underway in Pretoria, South Africa, between representatives of
Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai's
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
Neither leader attended today's (Tuesday's) meeting.
The talks are part of an agreement signed Monday by President Mugabe and Mr.
Tsvangirai in their first face-to-face meeting in a decade. The pact gives both
parties two weeks to complete talks on forming a government of national unity
and bringing an end to violence.
A spokesman (John Clancy) for the European Union welcomed the talks as a
"positive step." But he told VOA it is still necessary to maintain
pressure on Mr. Mugabe.
Earlier today, the European Union added 37 people and four companies to an
existing sanctions list of people linked to Mr. Mugabe's government.
