An explosion at a coal mine in northern China has trapped 43 workers.
China's official Xinhua news agency today (Friday) says explosives went off accidentally deep in the pit of a mine located in northern Shanxi province (Xiaoyi City). The report says 15 workers managed to escape.
The fate of those trapped in the mine is unknown, and a rescue effort is ongoing.
China's mining industry is notoriously unsafe, but Xinhua says the mine (run by Anxin Coal Mining Company) passed recent safety inspections.
China has the world's deadliest mines. Last year, explosions, cave-ins and floods in mines in China killed around 38-hundred people.
