Pakistan's government has condemned a U.S. air strike that killed 11 Pakistani soldiers at a checkpoint along the Afghan border.
Details about Tuesday's attack remain unclear. U.S. military officials in Afghanistan released a statement today saying U.S. coalition forces had retaliated after coming under fire from militants just 200-meters inside the Afghanistan border in the eastern Kunar province.
A Pakistani army spokesman called the U.S. airstrike an "unprovoked and cowardly" act. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told the national assembly that the country had lodged a formal protest against the airstrike.
Pakistan's foreign ministry also released statement saying the attack undermines the very basis of Pakistan's cooperation with U.S. coalition forces.
A U.S. State Department spokesman said he had no details on what happened but could understand the Pakistani reaction.
