9.11 테러를 주도한 용의자인 칼리드 세이크 모하메드가 5일 관타나모에 있는 미군 특별 법정에 출두해 자신이 순교자가 될 수 있도록 사형 선고를 원한다고 말했습니다.
이 날 쿠바 관타나모에서 열린 청문회에서 모하메드는 군과 민간인 법률 자문팀의 입회를 거부하고, 스스로 변론하겠다며 이같이 밝혔습니다. 모하메드는 코란 경전을 암송하고, 재판 과정을 '심문'이라고 일컬었습니다.
모하메드는 3천명 가까운 생명을 앗아간 지난 2001년 미국에대한 9.11 테러공격을 주도한 혐의로 4명의 다른 용의자와 함께 이 날 법정에 출두했습니다. 이들은 유죄가 입증되면 처형될 계획입니다.
이들 피고인들은 처음에는 미 중앙정보국, CIA 산하 수용소에 있다가 지금은 쿠바의 관타나모 미 해군 기지에 수년 째 구금돼 있습니다.
이들은 살인과 공모, 테러 등의 혐의를 받고 있습니다. 이 날 재판에서는 처음으로 이들의 모습이 일반에 공개됐습니다. 기자들과 변호인, 인권 운동가들은 이번 청문회를 참관할 수 있었으나 오디오 녹음이나 비디오, 사진 촬영은 금지됐습니다.

The alleged mastermind of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks -- Khalid Sheikh Mohammed -- has told a military judge at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that he wants the death penalty so he could become a "martyr."
During a hearing today (Thursday), Mohammed chanted from the Koran, called the process an "inquisition," and rejected his military and civilian legal team and said he would defend himself.
He was being arraigned with four alleged co-conspirators to hear charges against them for the attacks that killed nearly three-thousand people. They face execution if convicted.
The charges include murder, conspiracy and terrorism.
This is the first time members of the public have seen the men. Reporters, lawyers and human rights activists were allowed to watch the hearing, but no picture-taking or recording was allowed.
Mohammed told the hearing he was tortured while in custody. The CIA has admitted it used harsh techniques on him, including waterboarding, which simulates the sensation of drowning and has, in the past, been considered torture by the U.S. government.
