미국 국토안보부 마이클 처토프 장관은 파키스탄에 베나지르 부토 전 총리 암살과 같은 테러공격이 더 많아 질 것을 경고하면서 파키스탄 정부가 테러리즘에 대해 반격하도록 역설했습니다.
처토프 장관은 26일 아프가니스탄의 바그람에 있는 미군 기지에서 기자들과 만나 이렇게 말했습니다.
처토프 장관은 또 테러리즘을 통제하고 이에 반격하는 것이 이슬라마바드를 위해서도 중요하다고 말했습니다. 파키스탄 정부는 파키스탄의 부족 지역인 남 와지리스탄에 근거를 둔 탈레반 무장세력의 지도자 바리툴라 메슈드와 평화 협상을 진행 중입니다. 메슈드는 부토 전 총리 암살의 주모자로 지목됐으나 저격사실을 부인했었습니다.
나토 연합군은 파키스탄 정부가 아프가니스탄에 인접한 위험 세력인 탈레반과 평화협상을 체결하지 못하도록 요구했습니다. 한편 메슈드는 파키스탄 정부와 평화 협상을 체결하더라도 미국과 나토 연합군에 대해 계속 대항할 것이라고 밝힌 바 있습니다.

The U.S. homeland security chief is urging Pakistan's government to strike back against terrorism, warning it might see more attacks like the one that killed former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Michael Chertoff made the comments at the U.S. military base at Bagram in Afghanistan while taking questions from reporters earlier today (Monday).
Chertoff said it is important for Islamabad to - in his words -- "assert control and strike back against terrorism" on its soil.
Pakistan's government is negotiating a peace deal with Baitullah Mehsud, the leader of Taliban militants based in South Waziristan in Pakistan's tribal areas. Mehsud is accused of masterminding Bhutto's assassination -- a charge he has denied.
NATO has called on Pakistan not to sign agreements that endanger troops in neighboring Afghanistan. Mehsud has said he will continue fighting U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, even if he signs a peace deal with the Pakistani government.
