미국의 화성 탐사선 피닉스가 화성에서 생명이 유지될 수 있는 지의 여부를 알아내기 위한 연구의 일환으로 25일 화성에 착륙할 것으로 보입니다.
미항공우주국 나사에서 이번 임무를 관장하고 있는 과학자 Joe Guinn 씨는 앞서 24일 4억 2천만 달러 상당의 화성 탐사선 피닉스가 화성에 마지막 접근에 성공한 가운데 상당히 걱정했다고 말했습니다.
나사는 앞서 여러 탐사 로봇을 착륙시켰으나 이들 중 절반 이상이 실패했습니다. 피닉스는 화성에 도착하기 위해 지난 10개월 동안 6억 8천만 킬로미터를 비행했습니다.
피닉스가 화성에 안전하게 착륙할 경우 이 로봇은 화성의 극권 지대에서 얼음 표본을 채취할 예정입니다.

A U.S. space probe is expected to land on Mars today (Sunday / 2353 UTC), as part of a study of whether the planet is capable of sustaining life.
The scientist in charge of managing the mission for the U.S. space agency NASA (Joe Guinn) said Saturday he felt very nervous as the 420-million dollar Phoenix spacecraft made its final approach to the planet.
NASA has landed probes on Mars before, but more than half of its Mars missions have failed. Phoenix has traveled 680-million kilometers over 10 months to reach Mars.
If it lands safely, the probe will dig up ice samples from the planet's polar region. Those samples may help scientists determine whether Mars has the right chemistry for life.
