남아프리카 공화국의 최대 도시 요하네스버그에서 지난 16일 이후 외국인들을 겨냥한 폭력사태로 적어도 22명이 숨졌다고 남아프리카 공화국 경찰이 밝혔습니다.
목격자들은 폭도들이 흑인 빈민촌에 들어가 이민자들을 공격하고 상점을 약탈했다고 전했습니다.
요하네스버그에서는 적어도 2천 명의 이민자들이 폭력사태를 피해 경찰서와 교회, 정부 청사로 모여 들었습니다. 경찰은 2백 명 이상이 성폭력과 강도, 폭력 등의 혐의로 체포됐다고 밝혔습니다.
한편 최근 몇 년간 약 3백만 명의 짐바브웨 인들이 국내 경제위기를 피해 남아프리카 공화국으로 넘어왔습니다.

Police in South Africa say at least 22 people have been killed since Friday in a wave of anti-foreigner violence in and around Johannesburg.
The latest deaths include an unidentified man who was set on fire by a mob in the Reiger Park area Sunday.
Witnesses say mobs continued to roam through poor townships today (Monday), attacking immigrants and looting shops. Police made arrests and in one incident fired rubber bullets in an effort to control the situation.
At least two-thousand people have taken refuge in police stations, churches and government offices to escape the violence.
A police spokesman (Govindsamy Mariemuthoo) says more than 200 people have been arrested for offenses that include public violence, robbery, and rape.
South African President Thabo Mbeki and the head of the nation's ruling party, Jacob Zuma, have both denounced the attacks.
