일본 당국은 미국산 쇠고기 유입분에서 수입 금지 부위가 포함돼 있어 캘리포니아주의 한 공장에서 가공된 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 금지했다고 23일 밝혔습니다.
이번 수입금지 조치는 지난 2006년 일본이 미국산 쇠고기 수입 금지 조치를 해제한 이후 처음입니다. 일본은 지난 2003년 미국 광우병 파동 이후 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 금지했었습니다.
일본과 미국 정부간의 협정에 따르면 일본으로 수출되는 쇠고기는 20개월미만 연령의 소에서 가공돼야 합니다. 미국측 수출업자들은 소의 척수와 뇌조직, 광우병 위험이 있는 다른 부위들을 제거해야 합니다.

Japanese officials say they have halted imports of U.S. beef from a plant in California after discovering banned beef parts in a shipment to the country.
It is the first such incident since Japan lifted a ban against U.S. beef in 2006. Japan had imposed the ban in 2003 after a case of mad cow disease was discovered in the United States.
According to an agreement reached between Tokyo and Washington, all beef shipped to Japan must come from cattle 20 months old or younger. U.S. exporters must also remove spinal columns, brain tissue and other materials that have a higher risk of containing mad cow disease.
The U.S. embassy in Japan says it is investigating this latest case. It says the destination of the shipment, which contained a spinal column, was not Japan.
