Former US President Jimmy Carter toured the rocket-battered Israeli town of Sderot today as part of his visit to the region.
Mr. Carter met with police officials and the mayor of the town located near the border with the Gaza Strip.
Mr. Carter described militant attacks on civilians as a "despicable crime" and expressed his hope for a ceasefire.
Mr. Carter says his tour of the region is aimed at furthering Middle East peace efforts. The former U.S. president has been snubbed by Israel's top leadership over his plans to meet with exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal while in Syria.
U.S. officials and lawmakers have urged Mr. Carter not to meet with Hamas, which Washington views as a terrorist group.
