U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in the Middle East to try to push forward Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, but expectations for a breakthrough are low.
Rice arrived in Israel today (Saturday) to begin three days of talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. She will try to promote the U.S. goal of achieving a peace deal before President Bush leaves office in January 2009.
Peace talks have bogged down because of Palestinian rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip and Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas criticized the settlement expansion in a speech today at an Arab summit in Syria. He also said the next few months are going to be decisive in terms of reaching a peace deal with Israel.
