이라크 주둔 미군이 이라크의 한 검문소를 공습해 미국의 지원을 받고 있는 지역순찰단인 계몽위원회 대원 6명이 사망했다고 이라크 경찰과 현지 부족장이 말했습니다.
아부 파루크 부족장은 자신이 이끄는 순찰대원들이 이라크 중부 도시 사마라 인근에서 22일 발생한 공격으로 사망했다며 사고당시 사망자들은 모두 제복을 입고 있었다고 주장했습니다.
그러나 미군 당국은 도로변 폭탄공격이 자주 발생하는 지역에서 5명의 사람들이 “테러행위로 의심되는 행동"을 하고 있는 것을 목격한 뒤 공습을 단행했다고 해명했습니다. 미군은 사고 검문소를 계몽위원회 대원들이 지키고 있었다는 주장을 부인했습니다.
미국이 재정지원을 하고 있는 계몽위원회는 이라크내 알-카에다 테러조직을 탈퇴해 미국과 협력하는 주로 수니파 전투원들로 구성돼있습니다. (끝)
Iraqi police and a local tribal leader say six members of a U.S.-backed neighborhood patrol group have been killed in a U.S. air strike on their checkpoint.
Tribal leader Abu Faruq says those killed in today's (Saturday's) attack near the central Iraqi city of Samarra belonged to his patrol group. He says all of them were in uniform at the time.
However, the U.S. military says it carried out the air strike after five people were spotted conducting "suspicious terrorist activity" in an area known for roadside bomb attacks. The military has denied the site was a checkpoint manned by members of Awakening Councils.
U.S.-funded Awakening Councils consist mostly of Sunni fighters who have turned against al-Qaida in Iraq and joined forces with Americans.
