유럽의 미사일 방어체제에 관한 합의를 도출하기 위해 러시아가 더 노력할 필요가 있다고 미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관이 말했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 미국이 추진하고 있는 미사일 방어체제가 러시아를 겨냥한 것이 아님을 확인해주기 위해 미국이 러시아측과 많은 타협을 했다며 그같이 말했습니다. 게이츠 장관은 따라서 이제는 러시아측이 상응조치를 취할 차례라고 말했습니다.
게이츠 장관과 라이스 국무장관은 오늘과 내일 블라드미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령과 드미트리 메드베데프 대통령 당선자, 러시아 각료들을 잇달아 만나 미국의 미사일 방어체제가 이란을 비롯한 불량국가들의 공격을 막기 위한 것임을 설득할 예정입니다.
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says Russia needs to make an effort to reach an agreement about Washington's plans for a European-based missile defense shield.
Speaking to reporters on his flight to Moscow, Gates said the U.S. has made a lot of compromises to reassure Russia it is not being targeted by the plan. The defense secretary says it is now time for Moscow to reciprocate.
Russia has been skeptical of the plan since it was announced.
Gates will be joined in Moscow by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for meetings today (Monday) and Tuesday in an effort to show the missile shield is for protection from what Washington calls rogue nations such as Iran - not to threaten Russian security.
Gates and Rice will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and President-elect Dmitry Medvedev, as well as the defense and foreign ministers.
