German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in Israel to boost ties with the Jewish state in the year that marks the 60th anniversary of its creation following the Nazi Holocaust.
Ms. Merkel received a warm welcome from Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert when she arrived today (Sunday) at Tel Aviv's airport.
Chancellor Merkel says Germany has a special responsibility toward Israel because of her country's past. She says Germany must work with Israel to create a better future.
Israeli Prime Minister Olmert praised Ms. Merkel as friend of Israel and for what he called her courage in the battle against terrorism.
On Tuesday, the German chancellor will address Israel's parliament.
