Burmese democracy activists have called on the world to boycott televised coverage of the Summer Olympics in Beijing to protest China's support for Burma's ruling military.
A group called the 88 Generation Students - former students who led the country's 1988 national democracy uprising - released a statement today (Monday) also urging people not to buy Olympic merchandise.
The statement says China is a major trade partner, arms supplier and "defender of the junta in the international arena, especially in the United Nations Security Council."
The 2008 Olympics begin in Beijing on August eighth, the 20th anniversary of the 1988 democracy uprising. The military opened fire on demonstrators, killing an estimated three thousand people.
