The Okinawa assembly unanimously passed a resolution today (Thursday) demanding Washington apologize and compensate the family of a 14-year-old girl allegedly raped by a U.S. Marine.
The lawmakers are also demanding U.S. military commanders impose stricter discipline on the troops, and for the United States to reduce the number of troops stationed on the island.
Okinawan authorities arrested Staff Sergeant Tyrone Luther Hadnott on Monday over the alleged attack.
Hadnott admits to forcibly kissing the girl while she was riding in a car, but denies the rape.
The incident has sparked memories of the gang rape of an Okinawan schoolgirl by three U.S. servicemen in 1995, triggering large-scale protests.
