메사추세츠 주지사 출신의 미트 롬니 후보는 애리조나 주 상원의원이며 지난 29일 플로리다 주 예비선거에서 승리한 존 맥케인 후보를 맹렬히 비난했습니다. 롬니 후보는 맥케인 후보가 자신이 이라크 전의 조기 종식을 지지한다고 말한 것은 '비열한 책략'이었다고 지적했습니다. 맥케인 후보도 주장을 굽히지 않으면서 이에 맞섰습니다.
아칸소 주지사 출신의 마이크 허커비 후보와 텍사스 주 하원의원인 론 폴 후보도 이 날 토론회에 참석했습니다.
한편 한 때 전국 지지율 1위를 달리던 뉴욕 시장 출신의 루디 줄리아니 후보는 이 날 맥케인 후보에 대한 지지의사를 밝히고 중도포기했습니다. 아놀드 슈왈츠제네거 캘리포니아 주지사도 31일 맥케인 후보에 대한 지지의사를 공개할 예정입니다.
한편 민주당에서는 지지율 3위를 달리던 존 에드워즈 후보가 중도포기를 선언했습니다. 이에따라 민주당 경선은 뉴욕주 상원의원인 힐러리 클린턴 후보와 일리노이 주 상원의원 바락 오바마 후보의 양자대결구도로 좁혀졌습니다.

The remaining Republican presidential candidates faced off in a debate Wednesday in California, as the field of U.S. presidential contenders narrowed ahead of next week's multi-state primaries and caucuses.
In a heated exchange, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney accused Arizona Senator John McCain of employing "dirty tricks" before last Tuesday's Florida primary by saying Romney advocated an early end to the war in Iraq. McCain, who handily won in Florida, refused to back down from his claims.
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and Texas Congressman Ron Paul also took part in the debate.
Earlier in the day, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the race and endorsed McCain. The Arizona Senator is expected to receive another major endorsement today (Thursday) from California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
On the Democratic side, former Senator John Edwards also ended his campaign on Wednesday. His departure leaves New York Senator Hillary Clinton and Illinois Senator Barack Obama as the party's remaining candidates.
