Japan's military has been strengthening its capabilities to defend against potential threats from North Korea, which fired a missile over Japan's main island in 1998.
Japanese officials say the military installed its latest U.S.-developed missile interceptors at a base in Yokosuka Wednesday. Japan had already deployed the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) system at two other bases near Tokyo last year.
The surface-to-air Patriots are meant to be used a last resort in case interceptors fired by U.S. and Japanese warships fail to knock out incoming missiles.
North Korea's official news agency called Japan's deployment of the missile shield a "foolish act." It accused Tokyo of providing Washington with a base from which to dominate the Asia-Pacific region.
