Chinese media say the worst snow storms to hit the country in 50 years have killed dozens of people and affected millions of others ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
Officials today (Monday) said the weather is likely to continue and ordered urgent measures to be taken to address shortages and resolve transportation problems.
Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday that the bad weather in central, eastern and southern China is threatening lives and causing shortages of food, fuel and electricity.
As millions of people attempt to travel to family gatherings for the important holiday, many have been stranded.
Authorities said they expect the number of people stranded at Guangzhou's railway station to rise as high as 600-thousand today. More than 150-thousand people spent last night in and around the station, which is the southern end of a key railway link to the capital Beijing.
Chinese media say several major highways and airports have also been closed as a result of the heavy snows and freezing rains.
Lunar New Year falls on February seventh this year.
