U.S. officials say a U.S. soldier who was killed in a recent roadside bombing in Iraq was in one of the military's new, heavily armored vehicles at the time of the blast.
The military on Tuesday announced that the soldier died on Saturday after his so-called Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle hit a deeply buried bomb. He was the first fatality in the new armored trucks.
The soldier who died was a gunner, and was in an exposed position on top of the vehicle. U.S. officials say the three soldiers who were inside the cabin survived.
A Pentagon spokesman (Geoff Morrell) said U.S. officials believe the incident demonstrates that the highly armored vehicles can save lives.
