16일 중국에 도착한 미국의 존 네그로폰테 국무부 부장관은 베이징에서 원자바오 중국 총리와 만났습니다.
미국정부 대변인은, 네그로폰테 부장관이 이번 중국 방문중 여러 양국현안들을 논의할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 네그로폰테 부장관은 베이징 주재 미국 대사관이 인권운동가들에 대한 중국 정부의 점증하는 탄압에 우려를 표명하고, 또한 다음 주 베를린에서 강대국들이 이란에 대한 추가제재를 논의할 예정인가운데 중국을 방문했습니다.
베를린 회담에는 이란의 핵계획에 관한 미국의 정보평가보고서가 발표된 후 처음으로 미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관을 비롯해 유엔 안전보장이사회 5개 상임이사국과 독일의 외무장관들이 참석합니다.
네그로폰테 부장관은 17일부터 이틀동안 구이저우성 구이양에서 다이빙궈 중국 외교부 부부장과 제 5차 미중 전략회담을 갖습니다.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte has met with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao as he begins a visit to Beijing.
A U.S. spokeswoman said he would be discussing a range of bilateral issues. His visit is taking place the same day the U.S. embassy in Beijing expressed concern over what it says is an increase in Chinese repression of human rights activists.
It also precedes international meetings in Berlin next week on possible new sanctions against Iran.
Those talks will be the first between U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her counterparts from China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany since the release of new U.S. intelligence (in the National Intelligence Estimate) that says Iran halted a secret nuclear program in 2003.
