부패 혐의를 받아 온 남아프리카 공화국의 재키 셀레비 경찰청장이 국제형사경찰기구, 인터폴의 본부장 직을 사임했습니다.
인터폴은 남아공화국 검찰이 셀레비 경찰 청장을 부패혐의로 기소할 계획이라고 발표한 지 이틀 뒤인 13일 셀레비 청장의 인터폴 본부장 직 사임을 발표했습니다.
인터폴은 성명을 통해 셀레비 경찰청장에 대한 혐의는 조사돼야할 것이지만 셀레비 본부장은 전 세계적인 안보와 경찰간의 협력을 강화하기 위해 도와왔다고 밝혔습니다.
남아공화국 검찰은 셀레비가 지난 2000년에서 2005년 사이 유죄가 입증된 마약거래상으로부터 총 17만 5천 여 달러 상당의 의 뇌물을 받았다는 혐의를 두고 있지만 셀레비는 이같은 혐의를 모두 부인하고 있습니다.

South African police chief Jackie Selebi has resigned as president of the international law enforcement agency Interpol.
Interpol announced Selebi's resignation today (Sunday), two days after South African prosecutors announced plans to charge the police chief with corruption.
In a statement, Interpol said the allegations should be investigated but also said Selebi has helped to enhance security and police cooperation worldwide.
Selebi had held the largely ceremonial president's position since 2004.
South African prosecutors accuse Selebi of taking payments totaling more than 175-thousand dollars from a convicted drug smuggler between 2000 and 2005. Selebi has denied any wrongdoing.
On Saturday, South African President Thabo Mbeki placed Selebi on extended leave.
