U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates says al-Qaida militants have regrouped in Pakistan's remote border area, next to Afghanistan, and are beginning to focus attacks on the Pakistani government and military.
However, Gates says, the terrorist group's latest activity in Pakistan has not yet affected Afghanistan, where U.S., NATO and Afghan forces have faced a dramatic spike in Taliban attacks over the past two years. He told reporters the combined fored have inflicted heavy losses on the Taliban, while also beginning comprehensive reconstruction efforts.
Speaking to reporters (at the Pentagon) Friday, Gates raised the possibility of a substantial reduction of U.S. combat forces in Iraq. During the coming year, he said, American combat brigades in Iraq could be reduced by half, if current security gains allow for the drawdown to continue at its current pace.
